ITS Systems for WestConnex Tunnels, Sydney

M4 tunnel WestConnex

WestConnex is Australia’s largest road project, linking Sydney’s west and southwest with the city, airport and port in a 33 km continuous motorway. It will facilitate economic growth and urban revitalisation by providing new opportunities for residential and commercial development.

SICE will be responsible of delivering the M4E section, which includes two twin tunnels with a length of 5.5 km. In addition, the company is in charge of the M5 section contract, which also includes two twin tunnels with a length of 9 km.

SICE has been selected to supply the Operations & Management Software (OMCS) SIDERA (owned by SICE) for the M$ East section of WestConnex, currently in the commissioning phase of the project. M4E will be integrated in the future with the M5 section into a single control platform called Integrated OMCS (IOMCS), which will operate the entire WestConnex motorway scheme using SIDERA software.

Besides developing the control software and the C2C system, SICE has designed the following systems for WestConnex:

  • Communications Network
  • PLC network
  • Vehicle Detection System (VDS)
  • Variable Message Signs (VMS)
  • Lane Use Signs (LUS)
  • Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS)
  • Tunnel signaling
  • CCTV Network
  • Barriers
  • Overheight and Overweight Vehicle Detection Systems
  • Motorway Emergency Telephone System (METS)
  • Radio Network
